Projects / The Villain
About
The Villain is a sprite comic I made in college. It is highly inspired by / derivative of the seminal 8-Bit Theater, one of my favorites from the early 2000s. I don’t know if any of the humor holds up. Like early Penny Arcade, some of the value is just that anyone is making jokes about what was contemporary nerd interests.

Story
What happens if the villain and damsel of a cliché fantasy game died before it began? That’s the premise on which I hung over a hundred comics full of gags and (now, extremely old) pop culture references. An explosion happens about every ten pages to move the plot along.
Sprites
Background sprites come from a sprite pack whose origin I could not trace. Character sprites mostly come from Final Fantasy VI. Our main cast is made of obscure characters and recolors.
- Kavian is Clyde
- Lyssie is a recolored Celes
- Savannah is Daryl
- Aerimus is a recolored General Leo

Too obscure for you?
To my small cadre of college friends, the comic was a laugh riot. To anyone else it is a jpeg of cryptic nonsense. In the vein of explain xkcd, I decided to explain the jokes. Or at least provide references. There is a section at the bottom of each comic which lets you know why this is funny to someone.
I hope it helps.
